Wallops Island

Wallops Iceland is a 15.5 km ² large island off the east coast of Virginia and is part of a chain of islands that stretches along the east coast of the United States.

The island belongs to the district of Accomack County and is located directly south of Chincoteague Iceland, a popular tourist destination.

History

The ownership of the original Kegotank Iceland said island was awarded on 29 April 1692 by the English crown to John Wallop, whose name was also on the island. The property was divided into the following years more and more, until the state of Virginia in 1876 and 1877 these confiscated as compensation for unpaid taxes.

As of 1877, the property was divided again until 1889, when the ownership of several of the trustees at the Wallops Iceland went club. 1933, which is now officially registered as a club Wallops Iceland Association, Inc. the right to property. The members of the Association and their families used the island in the summer months for fishing and swimming. The Association grazed on the island until the 1940s, sheep, cattle and ponies.

In 1947 the U.S. Navy to use the northern two- thirds of the island on a lease basis for the testing of aircraft armament. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics ( NACA ), the forerunner of NASA, leased the southern 4 km ² for use as a rocket launch site.

The island is mainly used for the Wallops Flight Facility at NASA, although the name is also used for the area surrounding the island peninsula as a postal address.
