Walter Alexander Coachbuilders
Walter Alexander Coachbuilders was a coachbuilding company from Falkirk in Scotland. Established in 1922, the company exists today as part of the Omnibus manufacturer Alexander Dennis Ltd.. (ADL ) continued.
History
The company's founder, Walter Alexander, operating a bus company in Scotland by the name of Alexander 's Motor Service. In 1922 he decided to manufacture the bodies for buses and its bus itself founded with the participation of his son W. Alexander & Sons Limited.
In 1928, the great British railway companies bought into the Scottish Motor Traction (SMT ) operatively an extensive bus network in Scotland, and converted the SMT into a holding company. Alexander participated in the SMT and opened the company in order to access new markets and access to services and products of SMT. The following year he sold his body companies to the SMT.
In 1948 the company name in Walter Alexander & Co ( Coachbuilders ) Limited was changed. The Northern Ireland coachbuilder Potters took over in 1969, the Walter Alexander & Co ( Coachbuilders ) Limited. Following the acquisition a subsidiary in Belfast was established, which built almost all bodies of Northern Ireland's bus operators Citybus and Ulsterbus for a long period.
Since the early 1990s, the ownership of the company has changed several times. 1995 Alexander was adopted by the Mayflower Corporation and since 2001 has been part of Alexander Dennis Ltd. ..
Models
Alexander was between the 1970s and 1990s as a leader in the manufacture of bodies for double-decker buses. In addition, the company was able to establish itself in the 1960s on the market of Eindeckerbusse. A particularly strong position, the company had in Northern Ireland, where in fact in the 1970s and 1980s, all newly purchased buses got a build-up of Alexander. In addition, Alexander also built bodies for railcars of British Rail.
