Walter Rilla

Walter Wilhelm Karl Ernst Rilla ( born August 22, 1894 in Neunkirchen ( Saar), † November 21, 1980 in Rosenheim ) was a German actor and writer.

Life

Born the son of the railway engineer Friedrich Wilhelm Rilla and his wife Karoline founder visited the Fridericianum and the University of Königsberg. He studied literature, art history and philosophy in Wroclaw, Lausanne and Berlin.

He married Theresa Klausner († 1948), from this marriage comes the film director Wolf Rilla. Since 1959 he was married to the writer Alix Degrelle - Hirth du Frênes.

In 1919 he founded the literary journal "Earth". He engaged temporarily for the KPD or after its foundation for the left split CAPD. From 1920 he worked as a dramaturge for Berlin theater. Since the 1920s, Walter Rilla was one of the most important German character actors. In 1926, he starred opposite Elisabeth Bergner in The Violinist of Florence, 1928 alongside Marlene Dietrich in Princess Olala. In 1934 he went for a roll of film for the first time to England, followed by his final exile in 1936. Rilla there remained until the end of the 1950s as a recognized supporting actor in productions such as Star of India or sabotage agent.

Back in Germany, he had his first role in Confessions of Felix Krull on the side of Liselotte Pulver and Horst Buchholz. He played in the Doctor Mabuse films The Testament of Dr. Mabuse and Scotland Yard hunts Dr. Mabuse and in the Edgar Wallace films The forger of London and 13 rooms in the latter film as well as in I, Dr. Fu Man Chu, he joined each in father-daughter constellations along with Karin Dor.

In addition, Rilla was a writer, screenwriter, producer, director, and television actor. He had his final appearance alongside Ruth Leuwerik and Martin Held in Disorder and Early Sorrow. In 1966 he received the Film Award for his work in the German film.

He was buried in the cemetery in the village of Oberau.
