We Live Again is a free adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's novel Resurrection from the year 1934. Rouben Mamoulian directed by, the lead roles were performed by Anna Sten ( Katyusha Maslova ) and Fredric March ( Dmitri Nekhludoff ) played.
Action
The noble Dmitri Nekhludoff seduces and impregnates the young Katyusha Maslova, a servant of his aunt. Due to her pregnancy Maslova is fired, the baby dies after birth and is buried unbaptized. Katyusha Maslova draws then to Moscow where it descends into a life of poverty and prostitution.
Several years after the night together with Maslova Nekhludoff was appointed as a juror for the trial of a murder case. One of the defendants is Katyusha Maslova. Although it is considered by the jury as an innocent, she condemned the judge Due to a procedural error to five years exile in Siberia.
Nekhludoff feels responsible for Maslowas fate and tried to free them. When he does not succeed, he asks her to marry him Maslova. But it proposes its range.
Nekhludoff decides to give up his life so far and meets Maslova on the way into exile on the border with Siberia. With Maslowas help, he wants to start a new life. With a smile and Maslova Nekhludoff cross the border together.
Background
The female lead role was played by Anna Sten, a Russian actress who was taken from Samuel Goldwyn under contract and launched as the successor of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. Because We Live Again disappointed artistically and financially, Goldwyn dissolved the contract with Sten
The production ran from 12 June to 2 August 1934. The premiere was held in New York on November 1, 1934. Official release date was the 16th November 1934.
