Weeping Water is a city in Cass County in the U.S. state of Nebraska.

According to United States Census 2000 Weeping Water has a population of 1,103.

Location

Weeping Water is located in eastern Nebraska, about 25 km from the border with Iowa.

History

The name " Weeping Water " is derived from the French " l' eau qui pleure ", which in turn is based on a Native American name and refers to the sound that the water makes there when it crashes down a small waterfall. Translated it says: " weeping water ". The word origin is based on an Indian legend that tells of a fight between two tribes in which both sides had to serious losses and the families left behind shed tears, which then formed the weeping waters. The first settlers arrived Weeping Water in 1856, although the country was already longer listed in maps. The first log house was built, and in 1857 a post office was established. 1883 allowed for the arrival of the railway in Weeping Water its existence. Thirteen years before the town was officially registered. The surrounding quarries yielded enough limestone to build new buildings. This resulted, for example, 1888 was the first permanent school building; the first high school was completed in 1917.
