( Listen / i?) Wervershoof ( West Frisian: Wurreversoôf ) is a former municipality in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is located in West Friesland and heard since 1 January 2011 the municipality of Medemblik.

Location and economic

Wervershoof is just a few kilometers south of Medemblik on the IJsselmeer. The nearest train station is in Hoogkarspel in Stede Broec, five kilometers to the south.

The village has some tourism and small businesses, but the main sources of income are the horticulture and agriculture. In the district Onderdijk an old forge is a museum shop, and in Wervershoof itself is a remarkable old windmill.

History

On the origin of the place name Wervershoof there are different versions. For many, the name of the preacher Saint Werenfridus is derived.

The village was 1400-1800 quite small. The population fluctuated between 250 and 400 as the place in 1817, an independent municipality was, he grew up in 1868 to just under 800 inhabitants. After the Second World War, the population rose again to quite strong because especially for commuters who work, inter alia, in Hoorn, a new neighborhood was built.
