Weschnitz Valley Railway

The Weschnitztalbahn is a 16.4 km long standard gauge railway line, which runs from Weinheim on the mountain road to the Valley of the following Weschnitz to Fürth im Odenwald.

History

After the construction of the Main- Neckar line in 1846 along the mountain road developed the need to also connect the front of the Odenwald on the railway network. In the years after 1860 different track profiles were brought into the conversation. The aim was, among other things, lead to a distance of Worms Bensheim or Heppenheim in the Odenwald. 1869 Bensheim then was joined by the Nibelungen web over Buerstadt and Lorsch at the Riedbahn to Worms.

Parallel plans were made for a north-south path through the Odenwald, which were completed by 1882 as Odenwaldbahn.

Because of the difficult mountain terrain on the edge of the Odenwald, the desired east-west connection in the Odenwald was ushered after long discussions through relatively flat Weschnitztal of Weinheim.

Construction

The survey work began in 1890, construction work in 1893. Between Weinheim and Birkenau had in a fairly narrow valley portion to be built three tunnels and two larger bridges. On July 1, 1895, operating between Weinheim and Fürth was taken. The originally intended Continuation using Lauterbach to Wertheim for linking the three north - south routes Main-Neckar Railway, Odenwaldbahn and the Main Railway was abandoned.

Branch lines

  • Even in the more eastern About Forest prevailed keen interest in the connection of forest -Michel Bach and elections to the railway network. 1897, work began on the About Forest Railway, which was closed in 1994.
  • There was a routing of Worms Heppenheim in the Odenwald not built, but a direct connection of the Odenwald was desired to Worms, the connection path Weinheim four home Lampert Home Worms was built and opened in 1905.
