The Western Distributor is a short city highway in the center of Sydney in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales. It connects the Bradfield Highway and the Cahill Expressway in the center of Sydney with Victoria Road and the City West Link in Rozelle.

History

The Western Distributor was planned in the 1960s, when it was clear that the then existing access roads to the Sydney Harbour Bridge have the former, and certainly could not accommodate the projections of future traffic volumes. Because of the existing infrastructure and the buildings in the area it was decided to build a viaduct, which should lead to traffic on the city streets.

The new road was opened in stages from September 1972. The final stage was the ANZAC Bridge in December 1995. The Western Distributor replaced the constantly congested route from the city center out across Pyrmont Bridge ( closed in 1988 ) and the Glebe Iceland Bridge ( closed 1995).

Situated Permitted stretch

Below the Western Distributor, there is at the northern end, between Sussex Street and Kent Street, an abandoned road. It is a short distance Freeway in high position. The road also is used continuously, but the bottom is hanging in the air; it has been disconnected at both ends.

Course

The Western Distributor is an unusual motorway. Into town leads east to southeast to the ANZAC Bridge, again to the east, north, and then finally to the northeast. It distributes the traffic from the north of the city ( hence the name), collect the traffic from the city center and distributes it through Pyrmont and Ultimo, before she leads him over the ANZAC Bridge. In the direction towards the city center it takes the traffic from the Victoria Road (S40 ) and the City West Link (Met -4), as well as various entrances of Pyrmont and Ultimo, on. The traffic is distributed to the city center via different exits in Pyrmont and the western downtown, and on the Cross City Tunnel ( S76 ). The remaining traffic is routed to Bradfield Highway (Met -1) as a turn in the Cahill Expressway (Met -1) is not possible. ( If you drive on the Western Distributor to the east and wants to the eastern edge of downtown, have to turn to the cross-city tunnel, or drive through the clogged streets of downtown. )

Planned expansion

During construction of the Western Distributor was this part of the freeway corridor F3, which was planned as Northwest Freeway. Due to protests by the population of the city but these plans never came to fruition.
