Westmoreland is a town (town ) in Orleans County in the U.S. state of Vermont.
According to the census in 2010 it had a population of 350 over an area of 97 km ². The area is in the mountain ranges of the Green Mountains to the east of the main ridge.
The town, originally called Westford, was founded on May 15, 1780 an area of 23,040 acres ( about 93 square km ). There was a town called Westford already in Chittenden County, the name was changed in 1787 in Westmoreland. The colonization of the area began in 1799; the first town meeting was held on 29 March 1802.
Since the western area of the municipality consists of mountainous terrain that is suitable only for the timber industry, the agricultural settlements in the east of the district, where good farmland was found concentrated. By 1840, most robust plants such as potatoes and sugar beets were grown here; this requirement have been largely preserved until today. In the years after the Second World War but is still the mainstay tourism added: The lying in the town of Lake Willoughby is considered a tourist attraction.
