Wethau (Saale)

BW

The Wethau, Wiethe dialect, is a right tributary of the Saale. It rises in the Saale- Holzland (Thuringia) and ends in the castle district (Saxony -Anhalt).

Origin of the name

The river name derives from the Middle High German WET ( Waid - obsolete for hunting) and from the suffix -au.

Course

The headwaters of the Wethau lies in the Thuringian Saale- Holzland west of the city Eisenberg. It rises in the High bei Biirgel and flows above Petersberg together with a springing south of Hainspitz Creek. From there it flows northward over Combs Ritz, Hainchen and Zschorgula, crosses the border with Saxony -Anhalt, and flows through the towns of Seiselitz, Utenbach, Cauer joke, Great Gestewitz, Wettaburg, Weather Scheid, Mertendorf and Wethau. It flows south of the village Schoenburg in the Saale.

The Wethautal

The surrounding countryside is designated by the Wethau leaving the wood country as Wethautal. This also includes places that do not lie directly on the Wethau. The Wethautal is bounded on the east by heathland, in the west of the Molauer plate and passes into the Saale valley.

The Wethautal is eponymous for a merger surrounding communities to manage community Wethautal.
