Zobel ( ballerus sapa )

The sable or Scheibpleinzen ( ballerus sapa ) is a freshwater fish of the rivers Danube, Dniester, Dnieper, Bug, Don, Kuban, Volga, Kama, Vyatka, Ural and Terek occurs. He lives mostly in slow-flowing river sections. He rarely is longer than 35 inches and weigh more than 800 grams. With its silver color and the laterally strongly flattened, high-backed body, he is very similar to Guster. Breast and pelvic fins are yellowish, dorsal, caudal and anal fin gray, the latter with up to 48 soft rays is much longer than that of Güsters. The spawning season is from April to May weedy riparian zones. Insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans are its main food. The stock is in great danger.

About the Main -Danube Canal, the Sable is now migrated to the Rhine and is detected at the fish pass the Iffezheim regularly.
