. Sargasso Sea - In the sea of passion (Original Title: Wide Sargasso Sea ) is an Australian film drama from 1993 directed by John Duigan, which the screenplay with Carole Angier and Jan Sharp on the novel by Jean Rhys, a prequel to Charlotte Brontë Jane Eyre, wrote.
Action
The action takes place in Jamaica in the mid-19th century and tells the history of Edward Rochester, the protagonist of the novel Jane Eyre.
Antoinette Cosway grows up on the island as the heir of a large plantation. Her mother is mentally unstable; her disabled brother dies. The plantation gets into economic trouble, why Cosway the Englishman Edward Rochester marries. She falls in love with him, with time, the spouses alienate yet. Cosway is also insane and lives henceforth confined to the mansion of her husband in England. This is the starting point for the plot of the novel Jane Eyre, in which Antoinette Cosway is presented only as a minor character.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun - Times, 7 May 1993, he had rarely seen a film that would effectively show the climate of the time and place shown ( "I have rarely seen a film did more Effectively conveyed the climate it takes place in ").
Movie service wrote that the film was an " unsuccessful novel adaptation, which over colorful exoticism and symbolism never real access to their main characters " find. Only the film music was "excellent."
