History

Wiegboldsbur one of the oldest communities of East Friesland. The occupation of the site probably began in the 7th century to three artificially raised Warfen. A first church built by the inhabitants of the village in the 10th century. Around 1250, construction began on the present church made of brick.

In Brokmerbrief, the written down in the 13th century Code of Brocmanni, the inhabitants of the reclaimed land until the end of the 12th century settlement area west of Aurich, is in the 218ten Küre: " The Brokmänner raise this to the law, that no gedungenes wake within the Wiegboldsburer may be parish under penalty of eight marks and loss of the house. " prohibition " gedungenes entourage " ( mercenaries ) to have evidence that it is the Wiegboldsburer parish concerned a place that was under special protection. One may therefore assume that there was the place of judgment of Brokmerlandes in Wiegboldsbur. Since such sites almost always were in churches, there is a reasonable high degree of probability that was spoken in the immediate vicinity of Canon Law for the residents of Brokmerlandes. To date, there exists in the church wall still a iron collar of the pillory.

In the High Middle Ages, Wiegboldsbur ( = land to the seas and waters ) became the capital of the so-called Oprinerlandes, as the meeting place of the village is mentioned in documents in 1401.

With the rise of the chiefs of the house of tom Brok Wiegboldsbur lost its importance. Capital of Brookmerlandes was then Marienhafe. The Cirksenas that were to succeed the tom Brok, shared their territory for the administration in office. Wiegboldsbur counted from then to the Official Aurich and formed into this with the parishes Engerhafe, Victorbur, Bedekaspel and Forlitz - Blaukirchen the Südbrookmer bailiwick, whose headquarters was Oldeborg.
