Wiesław Maniak

Wieslaw Maniak January ( May 22nd, 1938 in Lwów, Poland, † June 28, 1982 in Kurchatov, Kursk Oblast, Soviet Union) was a Polish athlete. At a height of 1.71 m his competition weight was 74 kg.

His first start at a major international championship graduated Maniak at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964. In the 100 -meter run, he reached the final and finished in 10.4 seconds as the best Europeans in fourth place. Even with the Polish 4x100 - meter relay team he reached the finals. In the occupation Andrzej Zielinski, Wieslaw Maniak, Marian Foik and Marian Dudziak won at 39.3 seconds after photo finish decision before the silver remaining tie French relay, only the season of the United States was not available.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 1966 Maniak was able to confirm his reputation as the best European sprinters. In 10.5 seconds, he won the 100-meter title before the same time coming to the finish Frenchman Roger Bambuck and Claude Piquemal. The Polish squadron not reached the final since Marian Dudziak injured on the back straight.

1968 at the European Indoor Games in Madrid Maniak reached 4th place over 50 meters. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City Maniak already retired from the 100-meter lead. The Polish squadron qualified in 38.99 seconds for the final, but finished second in 39.22 seconds, only the eighth and last place.

Maniak occurred in 1971 at the European Championships in Helsinki again about 100 meters, but resigned in advance and has therefore not been used in the relay.

Maniak won in 1965 the Polish state championship in the 100 meters and 200 meters. About 100 meters he was also in 1966, 1967 and 1971 Polish champion. His Polish record in 1965 with 10.1 seconds over 100 meters was undercut by Marian Woronin in 1984.
