Willi Hartung

Willi Hartung ( born February 12, 1915 in Zurich, † June 18, 1987 in Sternberg, Canton Zurich ) was a Swiss painter of naive painting.

Hartung was born in Zurich, where he grew up and attended school. Inspired by his father William and his uncle Eugen Hartung, who were also a painter, he went to Zurich in an apprenticeship as a flat and decorative painter. Several study trips to Germany, France and especially Italy ( Florence) influenced the young painter and helped him to its own mode of expression. Since the late 1950s he traveled around the world (including the U.S., Mexico), became deeply involved with the various world views, but always found the way to Switzerland, where exhibitions of his paintings took place. In 1971 he settled in Wigoltingen (Canton Thurgau ) laid down. It created collaborative works among others with Ernst Egli and Martin Guy Marquardt. In addition to ceramic figurines and murals, he also designed stained glass windows ( eg church Glis, Vernamiège, Raperswilen ).

Hartung's paintings are an expression of a positive, modest lifestyle, but also reflect Hartung deep, open-minded religiosity. His predominant theme is that nature as well as scenes from the Bible, which is always a very life-affirming and positive force speaks of his images, which are designed detailed and almost ornamentativ and colorful. Significantly for the artist to show some pictures dreaming and sleeping, the float diagonally in the image and express a complete letting go and trust, a complete surrender. Most images were created in watercolor technique. Hartung's paintings hang today in various museums, but mainly in private homes.

On June 18, 1987 Willi Hartung died at his favorite place on the Sternberg in the Zurich Oberland, his grave is located in Wigoltingen.
