William Anthony Hughes

William Anthony Hughes ( born September 23, 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio; † February 7, 2013 in Fort Thomas, Kentucky) was Bishop of Covington.

Life

William Hughes received on April 6, 1946, in St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown to the priesthood. He studied at St. Charles College in Baltimore and at St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland. After various pastoral activities he completed in 1956 a study of educational science at Notre Dame University and became the first rector of Cardinal Mooney High School. He became a Doctor of Divinity (DD, theological honorary doctorate degrees) appointed. In 1961 he was called by Pope John XXIII. appointed Monsignor. He was superintendent of the diocese in 1965 schools and Vicar for Education in the Diocese of Youngstown.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on July 23, 1974 Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Youngstown and Titular Bishop of Inis Cathaig. The Bishop of Youngstown, James William Malone, consecrated him on September 12, 1974 in the Cathedral of St. Columba in Youngstown to the bishop; Co-consecrators were Joseph Bernardin, Archbishop of Cincinnati, and William Michael Cosgrove, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 13 April 1979, Bishop of Covington; he was introduced on May 8, 1979 to office. July 4, 1995 John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
