William Brenton

William Brenton (* in the early 17th century in England, † 1674 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was a British politician.

The Brenton's were a wealthy family during the reign of Charles I. They lived in Hammersmith ( London). After their emigration to New England William Brenton served as a deputy in Boston. He was later Vice- Governor of the Colony of Rhode Iceland. He was 1660-1661 President of the colony. Under the Charter of Charles II, he served in 1666-1669 the post of governor in the colony. Brenton was given a large piece of land because of its survey work in the colony. He measured and planned a considerable part of Newport, where he built a large house near the present site of Fort Adams. He was also a Quaker.
