William Darwin Fox

William Darwin Fox ( * April 23, 1805, † April 8, 1880 in Sandown, Isle of Wight ) was an English clergyman and naturalist. He was a cousin of Charles Darwin.

Life and work

William Darwin Fox was a son of Samuel Fox (1765-1851) and his second wife Ann Darwin ( 1777-1859 ). He attended school at Repton and enrolled on January 26, 1824 at Christ 's College, Cambridge a. 1828 met him here Charles Darwin, who was infected by his enthusiasm for entomology and he introduced her to John Stevens Henslow. Fox put his degree as Bachelor of Arts in 1829 and 1833 as the starting MA. On March 11, 1834, he married Harriet Fletcher ( 1799-1842 ), a daughter of Sir Richard Fletcher ( 1768-1813 ). 1838 Fox rector in Delamere in Cheshire. After the death of his wife he married on May 20, 1846 Ellen Sophia Woodd. 1873 forced him to abandon his health problems post as Rector of Delamere. Fox moved to Sandown on the Isle of Wight, where he died in 1880.

With his cousin Charles Darwin he used up all his life an extensive epistolary exchange.
