William Froude

William Froude [ fru ː d] ( born November 28, 1810 in Dartington, Devon, England; † May 4, 1879 in Simonstown, South Africa ) was an English naval architect and researcher in the field of hydrodynamics. Froude was a brother of the historian James Anthony Froude.

Froude was the first to reliable formulas for the resistance which opposes the movement of the water of a ship, and for the prediction of the stability of the ship.

In fluid dynamics, the Froude number bears his name, which is used in calculating the movements of liquid surfaces, such as waves.

In 1870 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society, in 1876, the Royal Medal awarded him.
