William Gargan

William Gargan (* July 17, 1905, † 17 February 1979) was an American film and television actor.

Gargan played character roles in many Hollywood productions, but was mainly known through his role as Detective Martin Kane in the eponymous television series 1949-1951. Gargan career came to an end in 1958 when he was diagnosed with throat cancer and the doctors were forced to remove his larynx. Overall, he has appeared in over 100 productions. Later Gargan - by an artificial larynx speaking - activist for the American Cancer Society and often warned of the dangers of smoking.

In 1941 he was nominated for his role in They Knew What They Wanted in the category of Best Supporting Actor Oscar. He was honored with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 1968.
