William Hugh Young

William Hugh Young ( born January 1, 1838 in Booneville, Missouri, † November 28, 1901 in San Antonio, Texas ) was a Confederate general in the American Civil War.

Life

Young's family moved in his youth to Red River County, Texas, and later to nearby Grayson County. Later, Young visited the Washington College in Tennessee, the McKenzie College in Texas and the University of Virginia, in which he studied from 1859 to 1861. In September 1861 he returned to Texas to recruit a company of volunteers for service in the Army of the Confederate States. First elected Captain in the 9th Texas Infantry, Young was promoted to colonel in April 1862 after the Battle of Shiloh. With distinction, he fought in the battles of Perryville and Murfreesboro ( Stones River ), in which he was wounded. After his recovery he took in 1863 at the Entsatzversuchen for the besieged Vicksburg under General Joseph E. Johnston at the Battle of Chickamauga and in part.

During the Atlanta campaign in 1864, the 9th Texas was allocated under the Young Brigade of General Mathew Duncan Ector. After Ectors wounding 27 July Young moved up to the brigade commander and received in mid-August the appointment to brigadier general. At the beginning of the Franklin - Nashville campaign of General John Bell Hood received the Division of General Samuel Gibbs French, to which Young's brigade belonged, on October 5, the command, the enemy base Allatoona on the railway line between Atlanta and Tennessee by storm take, and thereby suffered heavy losses.
