William Kentridge

William Kentridge ( born April 28, 1955 in Johannesburg) is a South African artist

Life

Growing up in South Africa in recent decades, Kentridge lives conspicuous "between" different worlds. He comes from a wealthy Jewish family that acted as lawyers blacks in the apartheid processes. He studied in South Africa and Europe, presented art from the elitist galleries and worked in theater projects of the type Resistance Movement.

In 1976, Kent Ridge from a study of politics and African Studies at the University of Witwatersrand. 1976 to 1978 he studied at the Art Foundation in Johannesburg. In the 1980s, he studied at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, worked as an actor, designer and theater director.

Today (2011 ) lives and works in Johannesburg Kentridge.

Work

In the eighties, Kentridge began to produce animated films, in which he reflects on the history and social circumstances of South Africa. He draws every frame of his productions by hand with charcoal or pastel colors. This gives rise to innumerable individual pictures with minimal deviations from which then composed his moving works. 1993 and 2005 he took part with animation films at the Venice Biennale, 1997 and 2002 at the Documenta. Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa, he designed a poster. At Documenta 13 Kent engined was invited again and the installation The Refusal of Time presented.
