William, Landgrave of Hesse-Rotenburg

William I " the Elder " of Hesse- Rotenburg ( born May 15, 1648 Kassel, † November 20, 1725 in Langenschwalbach ) was from 1683 Landgrave of Hesse -Rotenburg. He was a son of Ernst I of Hesse -Rhine rock -Rotenburg. William was nicknamed " the Elder " to distinguish him from his nephew William of Hesse - Wanfried.

Life

After the death of his father, Wilhelm ruler in one half of the Rotenburg Quart, given the Landgrave Moritz of Hesse- Kassel to the sons of his second wife, Juliane, as Mediatherrschaft quarter of Hesse- Kassel. He resided in Rotenburg an der Fulda, but held often in Langenschwalbach in the Taunus. William's dominions included the domains of the lower county Katzenelenbogen, the offices and castles Rhine Rock, Reichenberg and Hohenstein, and a proportion of Umstadt and on Vierherrischen an der Lahn. William died in 1725, and was buried in Langenschwalbach in the Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth.

Family

Wilhelm married on March 3, 1669 in Rochefort, the Countess Maria Anna of Löwenstein -Wertheim (* 1652). Anna died in 1688 and was buried in the Franciscan monastery in Boppard. He had eight children with her, including his successor Ernst Leopold II:
