William Leuchtenburg

William Edward Leuchtenburg ( * 1922 in New York City ) is an American historian.

He studied at Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. There he taught after a brief spell at Smith College, New York University and Harvard University for thirty years, and had the DeWitt Clinton held the Chair. Leuchtenburg was from 1982 for ten years until his retirement William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor of the University of North Carolina.

His topics are on the one hand the history of American presidents, in particular, he has published about Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as other constitutional jurisdiction story.

He is a member of the Organization of American Historians and the Society of American Historians (SHA ). 1964 awarded him the latter for his book " Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal, 1932-1940 " by Francis Parkman Prize from. With this addition, he won the Bancroft Prize from Columbia University.

Leuchtenburg was 1978-1981 president of the SHA. In the Term 1985/1986 he was then president of the Organization of American Historians. In 1991, he was for twelve months, the president of the American Historical Association (AHA ).

He was given the honor for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, DC select the quotes Roosevelt.

In 2007 he was awarded the North Carolina Award, the highest award the State of North Carolina for civilians awarded in the field of literature. In 2008 he received from the SHA to Arthur M. Leuchtenburg is married to Jean Anne since 1984 and has three children. He lives in Chapel Hill.

In addition to his university teaching and research activities Leuchtenburg was also an active participant in the political process, as he demonstrated in 1965 with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma. He also analyzed for the NBC the outcome of presidential elections and commented on various stations the inauguration of U.S. President. Leuchtenburg lectured at the Capitol, in the Supreme Court as well as in the French Senate. 1977 Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 25 - year reign. Leuchtenburg this gave the opening speech.
