William Marshall (tennis)

William Cecil Marshall ( born April 29, 1849 in London, † January 24, 1921 in Hindhead, Surrey ) was an English tennis player and finalist at the first Wimbledon Championships 1877.

Marshall was born in 1849 in London's Mayfair. Actually a real tennis player, he went to the first tournament at Wimbledon. He had a bye in the semifinals and then met in the final at Spencer Gore. While Marshall played from the baseline, Gore rushed to the grid, from where he fended off the balls of Marshall volley, earning him the victory. Gore eventually won 6:1, 6:2 and 6:4.

Marshall took 1879 again at the Wimbledon Championships in part and lost there in the second round to eventual winner John Hartley.
