William McCarthy, Baron McCarthy

William Edward John McCarthy, McCarthy Baron (often Bill McCarthy) (* July 30, 1925, † November 18, 2012 ) was a British Labour Party politician and life peer.

Life and career

McCarthy was born on 30 July 1925 and grew up in North London. He attended Ruskin College and following the Merton College. McCarthy worked at Mr. outfitters and worked as a clerk. At the University of Oxford, he worked as a lecturer ( Lecturer ) in the field of Industrial Relations. From 1965 to 1968 he worked as a Resident Director at the Royal Commission on Trade Unions and Employers Associations. In 1969 he became a Fellow of Nuffield College and Templeton College.

From 1974 to 1986 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Railway Staff National Tribunal. At Harland & Wolff, he was director from 1976 to 1986. From 1977 to 1979 he was Special Commissioner of the Equal Opportunities Committee. He was a member of the Civil Service Arbitration Tribunal since 1984.

McCarthy was a specialist in the field of Industrial Relations. He was a supporter of the British Humanist Association.

Membership in the House of Lords

McCarthy was appointed Life peer as Baron McCarthy, of Headington in the City of Oxford on 19 January 1976. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 3 March 1976. When his political areas of interest he gave to Industrial relations and labor economics, as well as theater.

He was a member of the Job Creation Group of the Labour Party, the Education and Employment Group and Culture, Media and Sport Committee since 1979. 's Labour group he was a member of the Trade and Industry Group and the Trade Union Group, both also in 1979.

From 1979 or 1983 to 1997 he was opposition spokesman on labor. He reported on 8 March 2004 to last word. On 2 November 2004, he took part in a vote last.

Family and death

McCarthy married in 1957 Margaret Godfrey. They had no children.
