William Wilton

William Wilton ( born June 9, 1865 in Largs, Ayrshire, † May 2, 1920 ) was a Scottish football player and longtime coach who coached the team the Rangers until his death.

Wilton worked since September 1883 with the Rangers, but went 16 years until he was appointed coach in 1899. Before his trainer commitment, he was managing director for the youth teams and from 1889 for the first team. In these ten years as Managing Director of the first team of the club won two championships (1891 and 1899 ) and three times the Scottish Cup (1894, 1897 and 1898). As 1890, the Scottish Football League was founded to Wilton also took care of the finances. At the end of the season 1890, the Rangers had to share the title with Dumbarton. In the 1898/99 season, the Rangers set a record for the ages - they won all 18 games, scoring 79 goals and conceding just 18 goals conceded. To date, this still managed any team. Only Arsenal came a little closer than they were a season undefeated a record 2004. Under the coach Engagement of Wilton Rangers won the championship eight times. The day after the last season game in 1920 Wilton wanted to go on holiday in Gourock, but he died on the first day of vacation in a boating accident.
