Wim Henderickx

Wim Henderickx (* 1962 in Lier, Belgium) is a Belgian composer of contemporary classical music. He lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.

Life and work

Wim Henderickx is professor of composition and music analysis at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, Belgium and the Conservatory of Amsterdam (Netherlands). He studied at IRCAM in Paris and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music.

Wim Henderickx was awarded with various major international prizes, including the " Jeugd - en Muziekprijs Flanderen " (Belgium ) and the " International Composition Price for Contemporary Music " in Quebec, Canada. He became a laureate of the Royal Flemish Academy (Belgium ) in 2002 and 2006, he was nominated for the Flemish Culture Prize.

He composed chamber music, orchestral music and operas, all of which are published by " CeBeDeM " in Brussels. His style is characterized by the influence of ethnic music from non-Western cultures, with influences from Indian classical music and Eastern philosophies have a special place in his work.

A CD of his "Three Ragas " appeared with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Grant Llewellyn. His opera "Triumph of Spirit over Matter " (2000) was commissioned by Music Theatre Transparant commissioned and premiered at the Brussels opera La Monnaie. His opera " Achilles " from 2003, was premiered in the Flemish Opera, moreover, it has been translated into Danish and in 2006 came several times in Copenhagen performance.

2006 realized Wim Henderickx two musical theater productions: " Een Total abduction " (in cooperation with Ramsey Nasr ) and " Olek shoot een beer" (in cooperation with Bart Moeyaert ). Both productions toured successfully through Belgium and the Netherlands. 2007 composed Wim Henderickx " Canzone " for voice and piano for the semi-finals of the Concours Reine Elisabeth, Brussels.

After a trip to India and Nepal Wim Henderickx began work on his " Tantric Cycle ," a series of compositions inspired by the Orient. " The Seven Chakras " (2004) for string quartet, " Nada Brahma " (2005 ) for soprano, ensemble and electronics and " Maya 's Dream " (2005) for oboe and ensemble form the first three parts of the cycle. The fourth part, his opera " Void / Sunyata " (2007) for five singers, ensemble and electronics was given by the Music Theatre Transparant in order and arrived in Antwerp (Belgium ), Zurich ( Switzerland ) and Stavanger ( Norway) to the performance. 2009 This opera was also in Bruges (Belgium ), Zwolle and Rotterdam played (Netherlands), each time with Wim Henderickx himself as a conductor. The fifth part of the cycle " Disappearing in Light" (2008) is written for mezzo- soprano, viola, alto flute and percussion. The sixth part is his orchestral work " Tejas (What does the sound of the universe look like? ) ", It was premiered by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jaap van Zweden in Antwerp and Bruges.

His composition from 2003 " Confrontations " for western and African percussion was performed in Mechelen ( Belgium) again in 2009. The CD " In Deep Silence - Modern Guitar Music" contains two works by Wim Henderickx for guitar.

Since 1996 Henderickx house composer of ' Music Theatre Transparant ', Antwerp. Wim Henderickx has for 10 years played the drums with the ' Nieuw Belgian Chamber Orchestra ', later the 'Beethoven Academie ' by Jan Caeyers. From this Henderickx orchestra was commissioned Le Visioni di Paura (1990 ) to compose. This was followed by orchestral works for ' Brussels Philharmonic ', the ' Nationaal Orkest van België ', the Catholic University of Leuven, the ' Royal Flemish Philharmonic ' ( deFilharmonie ), etc.
