Wojciech Kowalewski

Wojciech Kowalewski ( born May 11, 1977 in Białystok, Poland ) is a former Polish football player.

Career

Association

The 190 cm and 86 kg goalkeeper Kowalewski began his football career at Wigry Suwałki in his native Poland. In 1997 he moved to the Polish capital club Legia Warsaw. There, however, he was only behind Grzegorz Szamotulski and later behind Zbigniew Robakiewicz only the number two between the posts of Warsaw. After just one game in three years, the Legia managers decided to give him in January 2001 to rival Groclin Grodzisk. The short interlude at Grodzisk held 15 games. Finally, he returned again in the summer to Warsaw and came to the winter of 2002 to regular appearances for Legia Warsaw. Since the club but from then planned with talent Artur Boruc and the Bulgarians Radostin Stanev, the goalkeeper decided for a transfer. In January 2002, Kowalewski moved to the first Ukrainian League to FC Shakhtar Donetsk. There he had to compete with Shakhtar veteran Dmitro Shutkov and finally prevailed. In August 2004, he left the Ukraine and signed at the Russian club Spartak Moscow. The capital club Kowalewski played in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League and there rose to the root keeper, which he referred young man Aleksey Zuev on the team bench. It was not until 2007, the Croat Stipe Pletikosa has been committed to the poles moved into second place. Since the beginning of 2008, the goalkeeper was playing in his home country at Korona Kielce. For the 2008/09 season Kowalewski joined Iraklis Thessaloniki in Greece. After 1 ½ years in Greece, he signed then end of January 2010 a contract with the Russian premier league promoted FK Sibir Novosibirsk. For Sibir Kowalewski played 14 league games, but could not prevent relegation. For the second half of the season 2010/11 he moved to Cyprus Anorthosis Famagusta. However Kowalewski came only in a league game for the use and ended in early 2012 due to problems with the spine his active football career.

National

Kowalewski has played 11 times for the Polish national football team. On 10 February 2002, the goalkeeper was in the game against the Faroe his debut in the dress of Poland. Six years later, he was first nominated for a tournament in the roster of A- team. So Kowalewski was in the Polish squad for the European Championship 2008. Behind goalkeeper Artur Boruc, however, he did not play. The Poles retired after the first round. His last game for the time being graduated from the goalkeeper on 7 February 2007 in a 2-2 draw against Slovakia. He came on in the 64th minute for Boruc and yet conceded a goal in a 2-2 draw. Two years later, coach Stefan Majewski called him for the World Cup qualifier October 10, 2009 against the Czech Republic. In the game in which the Poles had only with a big win and a simultaneous defeat against Slovakia Slovenia rechenerische chances at a world - relegation place, Kowalewski ran on in the starting lineup his team. The game was lost with 0:2. In the last insignificant group game four days later, he finally had to give compatriot Jerzy Dudek.
