Wolfgang Larrazábal

Wolfgang Larrazábal Ugueto ( born March 5, 1911 in Carúpano; † 27 February 2003) was an officer in 1958 and president of Venezuela. After the fall of Marcos Pérez Jiménez on 23 January 1958 he was employed as interim president until the elections on 14 November.

Early years and career

His parents were Fabio Larrazábal and Jerónima Ugueto. After his education, he went from 1928-1932 in the Naval Academy. From 1942-1945, he commanded several warships and then became commander of the naval base at Puerto Cabello. In July 1947 he was promoted to commander of the armed forces and sent in 1949 as Naval Attaché in the Embassy in Washington.

Presidency

As Marcos Pérez Jiménez was overthrown on January 23, 1958 Wolfgang Larrazábal had previously been appointed just three weeks to the commander of the Navy. Nevertheless, he was appointed in ruling power vacuum of transition president.

Despite his short tenure there were several coup attempts against him, the bloodiest of them by former Prime Castro León on 23 and 24 July 1958. On November 14, he handed over his office to Edgar Sanabria to at the December 7 during elections ( in which he was second behind Rómulo Betancourt to run ).

Last years

After his retirement from the military, he was ambassador to Chile and ran again ( in vain ) in the presidential elections of 1963. Afterwards, he was several times elected to the Parliament.
