Wolfgang Thüne

Wolfgang Thüne (born 8 October 1949 in Holy City ) is a former German gymnast. His home club was the forward ASK Potsdam and later Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

He won with the team the GDR at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich a bronze medal in the team all-around. In the individual all-around, he reached the ninth position in these games. Also at the World Championships in 1970 in Ljubljana, 1974 in Varna, he was with the East German team third in the all around. His biggest single success was winning the silver medal on the horizontal bar at the World Championships in 1974. On the same device he had a year earlier in third place at the European Championships in 1973.

At GDR championships he won in 1973 and 1974 in the all around, 1969, 1973 and 1974 on pommel horse, rings gymnastics in 1973 and 1974 and 1974 on the high bar total of eight individual titles. Wolfgang Thüne, who was working as an officer in the National People's Army in East Germany, fled with the support of the stretching - world champion of 1974 Eberhard Gienger on June 2, 1975 during the European Championships in Bern in the Federal Republic of Germany. He joined the club there Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1977 German Champion in the all around, on pommel horse and the horse jump.

After the end of his active career Wolfgang Thüne worked in Leverkusen as a coach.
