Women's World Chess Championship 1937 (Menchik–Graf)

The battle for the World Chess Championship for women in 1937 was of the adversaries privately organized, but from the world chess federation recognized duel for the title of world chess champion between the London-based Czechoslovak defending champion Vera Menchik and the German challenger Sonja Graf. He was discharged from June 26 to July 16 at the Grand Hotel Panhans on the Semmering, only a few weeks before the tournament for the World Chess Championship for women in Stockholm.

Menchik had in 1934 a duel against Graf played, which was later falsely termed World Cup. At the time, won Menchik with three wins and one defeat without a draw.

Under the leadership of Rudolf Spielmann Sonja Graf was preparing at least since February 1937 in Vienna on the battle front and took " as a special attraction " also on the Siegfried Reginald Wolf jubilee tournament from February 22 in part.

Course

The duel won Vera Menchik significantly with 11,5:4,5 points. While Sonja Graf played in the White 4:4 games, including two victories against Menchik, the result was in the black parts of 0,5:7,5 why the Viennese chess newspaper Menchik certified a better knowledge of opening theory. Graf had demonstrated talent and originality, but it lacked her endurance. Menchik was certified to be dangerous by their skill level as the only woman for the male chess masters.
