Wood Lane (Central line) tube station

Wood Lane was the name of two now closed stations of the London Underground. They were both close by, but operationally were not interconnected. One was part of the Metropolitan Line and the other a station in a terminal loop of the Central Line. The station on the Central Line was located between the present stations Shepherd's Bush and White City.

History

Both stations were opened as part of the Franco - British Exhibition in 1908, the Central London Railway (Central Line) on 14 May and Metropolitan Railway (Metropolitan Line) on May 1. Originally it had been planned so that they should only be used during the duration of the exhibition at the adjacent exhibition center. However, they were then still in operation to transport visitors to various exhibitions and fairs.

On July 30, 1900, the opening of the section between Bank and Shepherd's Bush was. North of the latter station the Wood Lane depot of the Central London Railway was built along with electric power station. For the Franco - British Exhibition was built in 1908, a single-track loop around the depot around and at the northernmost point of a platform for the visitors. Even the White City Stadium ensured a high ridership.

1917 began the construction of an extension to Ealing Broadway, for which they built two more platforms. The extension was on August 3, 1920 in operation. The ending at the Wood Lane trains continued to use the platform within the loop. Because of the crowded conditions at the Wood Lane a few hundred meters north was further opened a new station called White City on 23 November 1947. The Station Wood Lane had been closed the day before.

By 2003 the three platforms were retained and as a material bearing on the still existing local depot in use. Because of the implementation of the urban development project Westfield London, the surface structures have since been demolished. Some of the facade was saved and is in the care of the London Transport Museum was handed over. A new station of the same name originated in close proximity to the Hammersmith & City Line and was opened on 12 October 2008.
