Worth Ryder

Worth Ryder ( born November 10, 1884 in Kirkwood, Illinois, USA, † February 17, 1960 in Berkeley, California ) was an American artist, curator and professor of art.

Life and work

Ryder came to Berkeley as a child and shut the Berkeley High School in 1903 from. He then studied 1906 to 1908 at the Art Students League of New York and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the University of Munich. 1911 Ryder went back to California and taught at the California College of the Arts until 1918. From 1921 to 1927 Ryder continued his studies in Germany, France and Italy continued. One of his teachers was Hans Hofmann. After his return Ryder taught at the University of California, Berkeley from 1927 until his retirement in 1955. His merit is that he has brought Hans Hofmann in 1930 to USA and also that Hofmann 1930 and 1931 taught at the University of California, Berkeley has.

The Worth Ryder Gallery at the University of California, Berkeley is named after Ryder. 1963, three years after the death of Ryder donated Hans Hofmann in honor of Ryder 45 paintings of the University of California, Berkeley.
