Wouter Crabeth II

Wouter Pietersz. Crabeth II (c. 1593/94 in Gouda, † June 18, 1644 in Gouda) was a Dutch painter.

Wouter Pietersz. II Crabeth. was a member of the well-known painter and glass artist family Crabeth. He was a son of the aldermen and the mayor Pieter Crabeth, who in turn was son of the famous glass artist Wouter Crabeth. He was trained by Cornelis Ketel in Gouda (uncle of the more famous Cornelis Ketel the young in Amsterdam) and probably by Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht.

From 1613 he made ​​an extensive trip to France and Italy. 1615 he was in Paris, in 1616 in Aix -en- Provence and from 1619 at Rome, where he met Leonaert Bramer. 1626 he returned to Gouda, where he in the same year a member of the militia was still. In 1628 he married Adriana Gerritsdr. Vroesen, the daughter of the mayor of Gouda. Around the same time he receives the order for the Catholic Church of St. Jan Baptist and the religious community Catharinagasthuis to paint two altar paintings that are now in the Museum Het Catharina Gasthuis in Gouda and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Both trays, one of Assumption of the Virgin and a disbeliever Thomas have strong Italian influence and standing of the art of Caravaggio near. 1631 and 1641 followed by two altarpieces for the church of St. Jan Baptist, who today are in the same museum.

Besides altarpieces he painted mainly genre scenes with Card Players and shepherds who are in the spirit of Caravaggio. These works were mostly probably shortly after his return to Gouda.
