Wushan County, Chongqing

Wushan County (巫山 县; pinyin: Wushan Xiàn ) is a county of Chongqing Municipality in the People's Republic of China. Inside the circle, at the mouth of the Daning River in Wushan Yangtze River, the town is located (巫山; Pinyin: Wushan ).

The ancient village whose history up to the Eastern Zhou dynasty stretched back, was abandoned and flooded in the wake of the Three Gorges Dam project. The residents were moved to the higher ground -foundation of the town. At Wushan the driveway begins (Chinese巫峡/巫峡, Pinyin Swordsmen, witches gorge ') in the Wu Gorge, the middle of the Three Gorges along the Yangtze River.

In the immediate vicinity of the Wushan bridge crosses the Yangtze River. With 460 m span makes it one of the world's largest arch bridges. It is a so-called CFST Bridge, a concrete -filled steel tube arch bridge for road traffic.

Approx. 20 km south of Wushan, in Longgupo cave ( Longgupo Yizhi龙骨 坡 遗址) is an important archaeological site. Among other fossils have been discovered here from the early Pleistocene and first of a new suborder of homo erectus, the "Homo erectus wushanensis " or Wushan Man (巫山 人, Wushan reindeer, English Wushan Man) attributed. Meanwhile, one assumes, however, that it is fossil remains of an extinct species of ape. The archaeological site is on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China ( 4-1) since 1996.

North of Wushan Daning River are located in the " Three Little Gorges ". They are partly as impressive as the great gorges of the Yangtze River. From Wuhan from them be driven with smaller ships. In the high and very close together, standing rock walls single Hanging coffins are seen. They are based on a burial custom of the Ba culture.
