Wyatt Ruther

Wyatt " Bull" Ruther ( born February 5, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, † October 31, 1999 in San Francisco) was an American bass player of modern jazz.

At the beginning of his career, Wyatt Ruther worked 1951/52, with Dave Brubeck and 1952-1955 with interruptions in Erroll Garner and briefly on Woody Herman. In between, he was accompanist for the singer Lena Horne. In 1955 he founded the Canadian Jazz Quartet in Ottawa, was 1956/57, first worked as a music teacher in Canada and played with Peter Appleyard, 1958 in Toronto. 1958/59 he played with Chico Hamilton, 1959 George Shearing. In the 1960s he worked with Buddy Rich, in the band of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Gerry Mulligan, Ahmad Jamal, Mary Lou Williams and 1964/65 in the Count Basie Orchestra. Between 1972 and 1984 he was part of the jazz scene of Vancouver and has performed Trio of Fraser MacPherson, but also with Mike Taylor and Renée Doruyter; then he moved to San Francisco, where he among other things Benny Carter accompanied.

In addition to his recordings as a sideman, he took his own septet mt to 1955 four titles for the album Basses Loaded.
