Xantener Sommerfestspiele

Xanten Summer Festival means a yearly mostly from June to August by the " Arena Theatre GmbH" oriented outdoor event in the amphitheater of the Archaeological Park in Xanten, at the gates of St. Victor 's Cathedral and at the outdoor stage in Birten with a changing program of ballet, concerts, musicals, opera and theater.

Development of the Summer Festival

Were first aligned with the Summer Festival 1983 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake in the partially reconstructed Roman arena of APX. The unusual background of the amphitheater and the atmosphere associated advanced then to " crowd-puller " as in the following years, among others Ivan Rebroff, the Bolshoi Ballet and Mikis Theodorakis shaped the program of the Summer Festival.

The date organizational highlight of the summer festival was the performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida with well over 250 participants for the 20th anniversary in 2002. Sideshows of Aram Khachaturian's Spartacus and Franz Lehar's The Tsarevich in the amphitheater, the open-air stage in Birten was in the same year, among others, a performance of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz was added as a venue in the program. Was according to the demand, the number of spectators increased in the amphitheater, which now provides about 2,500 seats and 4,000 standing places depending on the event.

As of 2003, eventually also became the occasion of the 775th anniversary of the Xanten Cathedral of the town charter Xantens part of the Summer Festival by was listed on the Cathedral Square Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Everyman. Since 2006, the program was extended by an additional two events for children from 3 years.

Justified by the success of the Summer Festival, the arena of APX established well off the festival as a venue for concerts and musicals in particular.
