Xavier Haegy

Franz Xaver Haegy, French: François Xavier Haegy, ( born December 2, 1870 in Hirsingen, † May 11 1932 in Colmar) was a Catholic priest, editor and member of the German Reichstag.

Life

Haegy attended the Episcopal High School in Zillisheim 1884 to 1887 and studied at the seminary at Strasbourg, 1887-1892. From 1892 to 1893 he was a student at the faculty of theology in Munich and from 1893 to 1896 at the University of Würzburg, where he joined the fraternity KDST. V. Gothia Würzburg joined. He received his doctorate there in May 1896. He also was the founder and chief editor of the newspaper Oberelsässische country newspaper in Mulhouse. Since 1901 he was the chief editor of the Alsatian courier in Colmar. He was a member of the District the day for the Upper Alsace since 1906.

From September 1912 to 1918 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the electoral district of Alsace- Lorraine 6 ( Schlettstadt ). In 1913 he took part in the peace conference of the Interparliamentary Union in Bern and Basel, with Eugen Ricklin. From 1918 he participated in the construction of the Alsatian party Union populaire républicaine (UPR ). In 1919, he protested against the French policy of assimilation and for denominational schools. After his failure in the Senate election of 1929 he retired from politics.
