Xavier Herbert

Xavier Herbert ( born May 15, 1901 in Geraldton, Western Australia, † November 10, 1984 in Alice Springs, Northern Territory ) was a writer, in Australia by the presentation of the Miles Franklin Award for his novel Poor Fellow My Country 1975 very well known been. He is counted among the sizes of Australian literature, where it is known for his short stories and his autobiography Disturbing Element.

Life

Herbert was the son of a railway engineer and learned as a child, the language of the Aborigines. In 1912 he went from Geraldton to Fremantle and took there his first work at the age of 14 years in a transaction, that traded with chemicals. Before devoting himself to writing, he worked in numerous employments in Western Australia and Victoria. After the First World War, he went to Melbourne and studied medicine for a year. There his writing career began with his first book Capricornia. This book is based in part on his experiences as a Protector of Aborigines in Darwin in the Northern Territory. Parts of this book he wrote in London Between 1930 and 1932. 1926 he went to Sydney.

In the 1940s and 1950s, he wrote relatively little, except Seven emus. In the 1960s he published two books before 1975 Poor Fellow My Country and short stories written. However, his Poor Fellow My Country is considered the longest Australian novel with more than 1400 printed pages.

Herbert stood up for the interests of Aboriginal people. This was particularly in his work Poor Fellow My Country to bear that is also about the life in the Aboriginal mission stations in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

He was known as a difficult person: His wife said that her life between the supervisor hovered about her husband and their children. Also, the biographer of Herbert was disappointed with the reports from him about his life.
