Xiaoliang Sunney Xie

Xiaoliang Sunney Xie (Chinese谢晓亮/谢晓亮, Pinyin Xie Xiǎoliàng, born 1962 in Beijing, China) is a biochemist and professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University. Xie is one of the founding fathers of the biophysical chemistry of individual molecules, in particular the single-molecule enzymology. He has made ​​significant contributions to the CARS microscopy.

Life and work

Xie received the B. Sc. in chemistry from Peking University in 1990 and his doctorate at the University of California at San Diego. He continued his research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago and was formed in 1992 at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he later assumed the position of Chief Scientist. In 1999 he was appointed professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University.

Xie examined as one of the first scientists in the early 1990s, the fluorescence of single molecules at room temperature. His group has since contributed to the emergence of single-molecule research field and its applications in biology. Focus of the research lies in the single-molecule enzymology, the conformational dynamics of proteins as well as the single-molecule dynamics in living cells.
