XML Metadata Interchange (XMI ) is a standard of the Object Management Group (OMG) and is increasingly recognized as an exchange format between software development tools used (such as the Eclipse Modeling Framework, EMF).

The format is open and vendor- neutral and allows the exchange of data objects on the basis of meta- meta-models according to the Meta - Object Facility (MOF). In addition to UML models arbitrary metadata can be replaced as long as this can be expressed using the MOF. Due to the XML format corresponding files can be easily created, searched, processed, stored and transmitted over the Internet. In this respect, is superior to alternative XMI interchange formats such as CDIF.
