The Yahoo Messenger (own letters Yahoo! Messenger, also briefly Y! M, YIM or Yim ) is a common instant messaging client and a protocol of Yahoo. The Yahoo Messenger is free and can be downloaded and installed with a valid Yahoo access.

The functions of Yahoo Messenger ICQ are very similar to the AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Live Messenger, but they are mutually incompatible. However, Microsoft and Yahoo have decided to combine their IM services. Since version 8 of Yahoo Messenger at least text messages with Windows Live Messenger can be exchanged.

Software

The current version for Windows is the Yahoo Messenger 11.5 or 3.02 Mac OS X. There are also versions for Android and iOS. The software supports not only the operating systems mentioned above still Linux, Solaris, inter alia, in outdated versions. For Linux there is a compatible with current version client called Gyachi. The Yahoo Messenger offers text messaging and voice calls, webcams, games and photo sharing. Some features are only supported on the Windows version.

The use of alternative instant messaging software you want to communicate with the Yahoo Messenger network is not desirable from Yahoo. Multi-protocol clients that support the Yahoo Messenger protocol are explicitly prohibited by the terms and conditions of Yahoo messenger services.

Dissemination

According to Nielsen NetRatings (January 2006) the number of European Yahoo Messenger users is 4.65 million. The service is used an average of 13.6 times per month. Average spent the European users two hours and 15 minutes per month using the Yahoo Messenger.
