The 1070 km long Yarkant (also Yarkand, Yarkand, Jarkend called ) is one of the headwaters of the Tarim River in China ( Asia).

The river arises in the extreme west of the People's Republic in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Its source is located on the northeast side of the Rimomassivs. From there it flows in a northerly direction through the high mountains, already makes little below its source the border to the east adjoining Kunlun Shan and reaches the western part of the Tarim Basin. In it, he runs through the past in 1270 m Circle Yarkant and the western part of the Taklamakan Desert in the north. Some south of Aksu led the Yarkant in the Tarim, as long as he led there still water.

The Yarkant supplied the Tarim still in the 1950s annually with 1-1.5 billion cubic meters of water, but from 1979 he led in the lower reaches no more water; thus there 59% of Euphrates Poplar stocks died off until 1993.
