Yarmouth (Isle of Wight)

Yarmouth is a port and civil parish on the north west coast of the Isle of Wight, southern England. The town lies at the mouth of the River Yar in the Western Solent. Yarmouth is the smallest town in the United Kingdom.

History

Yarmouth is one of the earliest settlements of the Isle of Wight and has existed for over a thousand years. The first written mention of the village under the name Eremue ( which translates as " muddy estuary " means ) dates from the year 991 in a charter of King Æthelred about Danegeld. The town was granted the right to call themselves " town" in 1135.

During the Middle Ages the place a Parliamentary Borough and until 1832 was also a constituency. Prior to the construction of a castle, the town was repeatedly attacked by the French and finally burned down in 1544. The church bells were brought here, according to a legend, Cherbourg or Boulogne -sur -Mer. Three years later, a castle under the name of Yarmouth Castle was built, which is part of the English Heritage today. It was used to monitor the Solent and the protection of the Isle of Wight and the prevention of invasions.

In 1863 a bridge over the mouth of the river Western Yar was built, replacing the previously -used ferry. The pier of Yarmouth was built in 1876 and is still the longest wooden pier in England's publicly accessible.

Economy

In Yarmouth, there are some shipyards and for the population relatively large number of shops, hotels, pubs and restaurants. Due to construction work on the road to Newport as well as repairs to the bridge the road to Totland and problems with the ferry to the mainland, the turnover of transactions fell by 30 % in 2009.

Traffic

Yarmouth is connected via the Wightlink ferry to Lymington with the mainland. As the only road the A3054 through the village. It connects the island's capital Newport on Shallfleet, Yarmouth and Freshwater with Totland. Until 1953, passenger trains drove to Newport. Thereafter, the rail traffic was stopped and the rails were removed.

Attractions

Yarmouth is located on the Isle of Wight Coastal Path. There is also the SSSI Yar Estuary and Boulnor and Hamstead Cliffs.
