Yatsushiro Sea

The Yatsushiro Sea (Japanese八 代 海, Yatsushiro -kai ) is a bay of the Pacific Ocean on the Japanese island of Kyushu.

Another name is Shiranuhi Lake (不知 火海, Shiranuhi -kai ), also called the Shiranui Sea, which refers to the nocturnal luminous phenomena. These originate ( Isaribi ) and are broken in an unusual way by the lights that are used to attract the fish.

The chemical company Chisso headed mercury-containing industrial waste in the waters, which in 1956 led to the occurrence of Minamata disease.

Geography

In the west there are two straits to the East China Sea, where the sea area at this point Amakusa - nada (天 草滩) is called:

  • Kuro -no- seto (黒 之 瀬 戸, 32.097222222222130.17222222222 ⊙ ) between Kyushu and Nagashima, which is 350 m wide at its narrowest point, and
  • Nagashima Kaikyo (长岛 海峡) and Nagashima - seto (长岛 瀬 戸, 32.2130.08333333333 ⊙ ) between Nagashima and Shimoshima.

In the northwest, the Bay of the Amakusa Islands and the north of the Uto Peninsula (宇 土 半岛, Uto- Hanto ) is limited. Beyond these two lies the Ariake Sea, consists of the combination of the following straits:

  • Hondo - seto (本 渡 瀬 戸, 32.4375130.20833333333 ⊙ ) between Shimoshima and Kamishima, which is 50 m wide at its narrowest point;
  • Michigoe -no- seto (満越ノ瀬戸, 32.547222222222130.41666666667 ⊙ ) between Kamishima and Ōyano -jima;
  • Sankaku -no- seto (三角ノ瀬戸, 32.616666666667130.45555555556 ⊙ ) between Ōyano -jima and the Uto Peninsula.

In the northeast is the Yatsushiro - level (八 代 平野, Yatsushiro - heiya ), in which the city is located Yatsushiro, otherwise the east coast of Kyushu Highlands (九州 山地, Kyushu - sanchi ) is marked. In the south, there is another level.

The dimension is 15 km from east to west and 70 km in north-south direction. In addition, the bay is relatively shallow at 50 meters depth.
