Yeşilyurt ( Turkish for Green Country; Kurdish: Çirmiktî ) is a town and a district in the Turkish province of Malatya. To the north it borders on the city of Malatya, in the west to the counties akcadag and Dogansehir, to the south by the province of Adiyaman.

The south of the district, is surrounded by the Malatya Dağları, the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. The highest point is 2,545 m of Beydagi. The area is 568 km ², the county has 45 551 inhabitants (as of 2000).

Economy

The region's economy is mainly agricultural, animal husbandry, weaving and small industrial facilities. The main products are: wheat, barley, apricots, cherries, tobacco and grapes. In the higher areas of the county bees, goats and sheep are operated. Moreover here Textile companies are based in which threads, wool and textile products are manufactured.

History

In Yeşilyurt been no archaeological excavations have been made. That is why the history of this region is not much known. In Kalatepe Byzantine ruins were discovered from the eighth and ninth centuries. These buildings were used at that time as a guard station. During the Ottoman Empire the city was called Çirmikti. After the founding of the Republic of Turkey, he was named İsmet Paşa and renamed in 1957 for political reasons in Yeşilyurt.

Recreational areas

On the scenic banks of the River Derme Suyu, also popularly known Beyler Deresi, there are parks and gardens, which are used by the locals for barbecues and picnics. One of the most popular sites is Pınarbaşı, the source of Beyler Deresi.
