Yngve Brilioth

Yngve Torgny Brilioth ( born July 12, 1891 at the parish Västra Ed, Västervik Municipality, † April 27, 1959 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian.

Life

Brilioth in 1916 received his doctorate in philosophy in 1918 and ordained. In 1919 he became professor of church history at the University of Uppsala in 1925 professor at the Swedish-language Åbo Akademi in Turku. Three years later he was appointed the Lund University as professor of practical theology as well as to the provost. Bishop in Växjö he was 1938. 1950 he became Archbishop of Uppsala and served until his retirement in 1958 as the highest ranking official in the Church of Sweden

As a church historian Brilioth dealt primarily with the history of the Middle Ages and the High Church Oxford Movement. Later he wrote monographs on the history of the sacrament of piety and preaching. He has also been involved since its inception in the Ecumenical Movement for Faith and Order and in 1947 chairman of the movement, which was incorporated in 1948 as a Commission on Faith and Order in the World Council of Churches (WCC ) (until 1956).

He was the son of Nathan Soderblom.
