Yo-Yo Ma

Yo- Yo Ma (Chinese马友友, Pinyin Mǎ Yǒuyǒu ) ( born October 7, 1955 in Paris ) is an American cellist.

Life

Ma, son of Hong Kong singer Marina Lu and a violinist, music professor and conductor Hiao - Tsiun Ma, began playing the cello at the age of four. When he was seven years old, his family moved to New York City and at age eight, he performed with Leonard Bernstein on the U.S. television. Bernstein gave him the Juilliard School, where he became a pupil of Leonard Rose.

His 50 albums received 16 Grammy Awards (as of 2011 ); In 1999 he received the Glenn Gould Prize. Besides classical music, he also released albums with Bobby McFerrin and an album of tango pieces by Astor Piazzolla. In 2011 he recorded the album The Goat Rodeo Sessions together with Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile. 2011 appeared a collection of 90 CDs ( 30 Years Outside The Box), which contains all the images that Yo -Yo Ma has made for CBS and Sony Classical.

In 2012 he received together with Paul Simon the Polar Music Prize.
