Yorkshire Three Peaks

As Yorkshire Three Peaks ( engl. the "three peaks of Yorkshire " ), the three mountains Whernside ( 736 meters), Ingleborough ( 723 meters ) and Pen-y- ghent referred ( 694 m).

The three mountains are part of the Pennines and grouped around the area of the River Ribble in the Yorkshire Dales in Northern England.

Special

The rock consists in essence of fine and coarse limestone, these layers occur alternately, what the mountain flanks are a characteristic step-like appearance. This is particularly pronounced at Ingleborough and Pen-y- ghent.

In the area of the "Three Peaks" are known caves and England's highest waterfall, the 110 -meter-high fur Beck. On Ingleborough also is a large Iron Age hill fort.

The railway line Settle - Carlisle leads, partly in tunnels, through the Three Peaks area through, between Ingleborough and Whernside it passes over the Ribblehead Viaduct.

The Three Peaks Walk is a 40 km loop trail on all three mountains. The Pennine Way, one of the most popular long distance walks in England, via the Pen-y- ghent.

Events

Since 1954 mountain running Three Peak Race is held annually over about 37 km in April, leading over the three peaks.
